Google Guidelines For Websites and Blogs

There is no official page where Google Declares these guidelines for websites, but I have gathered these insights from Official Google Forums where employees from Google resolve customer queries.

Some of these insights are also gathered from the following Twitter Accounts -

  • Google Search Liaison  - This is the official account where Google shares information about how Google Search Works
  • Danny Sullivan - He is a member of Google Search Liasion and helps in understanding Google and search by resolving to various queries

Feel free to follow these accounts on Twitter to know about any update related to Google Search Algorithms and to better understand the Google Search in itself

Google Guidelines: Do's and Don'ts

1. Make your website stand out from others

A website that is different from others in the niche generally attracts more attention and user engagement. I'm not just talking about the content offered but also the way in which it is offered. There are many ways to make your website unique -

  • Have a customized theme installed
  • Introduce new designs by using CSS
  • Create user engaging content on your website. This could be in form of Polls, Surveys, Unique Widgets and so on.
There is no bar to your creativity. Your website is representative of your brand in the online world. Try building a personality around it.

Try to build something different that others in your Niche are not offering.

Example: I will use the example of my own gaming blogs that I started on Google Blogger/Blogspot on which I implemented and tested out this feature

The first blog is for the game Lords Mobiles War Kingdom. The blog was built on the default themes provided by Blogger.

Well, everyone back then used to make gaming blogs on the default themes which blogger provides. The traffic was normal. It was just one of the blogs that gamers were used to. Unique in term of content yet reflects just another gaming blog

So, next time I decided to bring in my creative punch and designed and used a customised theme for my other gaming blog - Dragonstone Guilds and Heroes ( Now known as Dragonstone Kingdoms)

This is what it looks like and Yes this blog is on Google Blogger/Blogspot

Since no one back then was using customized themes and interactive features that this blog offered. I got an instant hit and a tremendous rise in traffic. So, much so that I even got my Google Adsense Approved on this blog.

Hence, be the trend changer in your Niche and make your website stand out from others

2. Make Pages Primarily For Users and Not For Search Engines

Around 2011, when the Google Panda algorithm was launched. It began listing websites that were keyword heavy.

Soon enough Google Panda was replaced by Google Penguin Algorithm in 2012. Many bloggers saw a drop in SERP rankings.

Ever since then and even the latest release of Google Algorithm has given importance to user-friendly content. Yes, keywords help to identify what the blog is about but do not overstuff your article with them.

Keywords are just one of the most popular factors to get search engine attention even today. But, now Google has been using advanced semantic modeling algorithms to understand what is there on each page and how helpful it will be to the users. They are also penalizing websites who constantly involve in such techniques

Avoid such hacks and tricks and create content for people

Example: You need to be able to believe in yourself to take the leap into entrepreneurship or any other aspiration. Believing in yourself is the lynchpin of exceptional leadership. Learning how to believe in yourself is critical to creating the life you desire.

How will you feel if you have to read a blog where every sentence uses the keyword? In the above case the keyword is Believe in Yourself

Try to avoid this

3. Think About What Makes Your Website Unique

Every website like every brand in the market is unique. It has its own Unique Selling Propositions (USPs) which has to identified and capitalized.

In order to identify your USP, make a list of all those points that make your website different from all others in your niche. And then create a strategy around it and use it to your advantage.

Example: I will take the example of our current blog - The blog is a multi-niche blog designed to help a lot of people with in-depth and highly researched articles. I believe it has a decent theme and easy to use interface design.

But none of this is our USP.

The blog is managed by 6 MBA graduates, each coming from diverse backgrounds in terms of their education, their work experience, their area of expertise. So, this is our USP... what we offer here is not only backed up by a lot of research but also from solid experience.

So, I want you to think about the USP of your website and build a strategy accordingly.

1. Deceive Your Users & Apply Tricks

Do not at any condition try to deceive your users by providing information that may be harmful to them. This also includes asking users to click certain links or gathering data from them for other purposes than declared.

Also, try to stay away from Black Hat SEO tricks. This refers to a set of practices that are used to increases a site or page's rank in search engines through means that violate the search engines' terms of service

2. Use Clocking & Adding Hidden Pages

Cloaking is a search engine optimization (SEO) technique in which the content presented to the search engine spider is different from that presented to the user's browser. This is done by delivering content based on the IP addresses or the User-Agent HTTP header of the user requesting the page.

Make sure you do not add any hidden page or include a hidden script on your website that has access to user data. This too puts a red flag on your website causing it's ranking to crash

3. Automated Content

Recently, many bloggers have started using Automated content tools which either rephrase an article to make it unique or combine different articles to make a new one.

There are many tools that can generate a 1000 words article in 5 minutes based on the core keyword.

As paraphrasing tools and plagiarism removal tools are becoming better and better with each passing year, many have started using these tools. I have personally seen people promoting these on FB groups

Avoid using these at all costs

Make sure to stick to these guidelines to have a health SEO of your website.
